Before there was Elon Musk, there was William Crapo Durant. It’s highly unlikely that Musk, one of the world’s richest people, will die penniless, but in other respects he and Durant have a lot in common. One thing I found out is that the world is not always kind to visionaries with self-control issues. Durant flamed out at G.M. In contrast, the prudent organization man who eventually succeeded him, Alfred Sloan, went from success to success.

CNN —The dominant perception of early photography from West Africa is that it was taken through a colonizing lens. These are questions asked by a new book that seeks to re-examine the history of photography in the region. Her book demonstrates that gap was short, and history has been obscured in a way that has disenfranchised many Africans. Unlike some other West African nations, Senegal has no recorded history of portraiture before photography, Paoletti said. Crespo set to take charge at UAE club Al Ain
  + stars: | 2023-11-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 13 (Reuters) - Al Ain-bound Argentine coach Hernan Crespo will arrive on Monday to formally sign his contract, the UAE club said. Crespo will succeed Dutch coach Alfred Schreuder who parted ways with Al Ain last week after just six months in charge following media reports he would be moving to Saudi Arabia. Al Ain made the announcement on social media platform X with a video clip reviewing Crespo's career as a player and coach. Al Ain signed 51-year-old Schroeder last May after the departure of coach Sergei Rebrov, but media have linked the Dutch coach with Saudi champions Al-Ittihad, who have sacked Portuguese coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Al Ain are third in the UAE Pro League with 15 points after seven games.

LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - A panel of European Union lawmakers on Tuesday voted in favour of easing the bloc's securities rules to encourage more company listings and compete better with capital markets in New York and post-Brexit London. Companies in the EU typically turn to banks for loans to expand, and the reforms are aimed at diversifying corporate funding. Multiple-voting structures are a key part of New York's attraction as a listings destination, particularly for tech companies. Britain is rewriting its securities rules which it inherited when it was a member of the EU and its planned changes are similar to those approved by EU lawmakers on Tuesday. The European Parliament and EU states have joint say on the EU rules and will now start negotiations on a final text that becomes law.

Ismaeel Mohammad and Almoez Ali pulled Al Duhail back into contention before Ronaldo's 81st-minute volley restored their two-goal cushion, only for Michael Olunga to hit Al Duhail's third with five minutes remaining to ensure a tense finish. The win moves Al-Nassr three points clear of Iran's Persepolis, who saw Alireza Beiranvand make a seventh-minute penalty save from Senin Sebai before winning 2-0 in Tehran against FC Istiklol of Tajikistan. Saeid Sadeghi scored twice to earn the home side their second win in three games and go five points clear of Al Duhail and Istiklol, who have a solitary point each. A riddle haunts the Titan disaster. It’s the presence on the doomed craft of Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77. The Frenchman was one of the world’s great submariners. So why was he, of all people, diving repeatedly to the Titanic on a submersible that many experts saw as a catastrophe waiting to happen? “It’s a source of great puzzlement,” said Victor L. Vescovo, a sea explorer who hired Mr. Nargeolet to oversee a series of unusually deep dives.

But Titan, the lost submersible from the company OceanGate, is a technological maverick based on novel concepts that differ from standard designs. “I’ve had three people ask me about making a dive on it,” he said in reference to the lost submersible. Private vessels — those used on superyachts, exploratory craft, tourists jaunts — are not formally regulated by any governmental or intergovernmental agency. Nor do they meet the rigorous standards that are applied to deep-sea craft used by the United States Navy and other government agencies. “We are proud that every submersible delivered remains in active service and certified to its original design depth,” it says on the company’s website.

Georgia O’Keeffe, ‘Modernized’ by MoMA
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( Roberta Smith | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the spring of 1946 the Museum of Modern Art mounted its first solo exhibition of a female artist: a retrospective devoted to the work of the American painter Georgia O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe’s success owed much to Stieglitz’s promotion, especially his eroticized reading of her paintings of landscapes and semiabstract flowers as expressions of female sexuality. By 1929, O’Keeffe was quite well-off, thanks to Stieglitz’s efforts. Yet for nearly 80 years after O’Keeffe’s MoMA retrospective, the museum didn’t pay her much attention. Since 1946 its O’Keeffe holdings has risen lackadaisically to 13 works, including five from the artist’s foundation and bequest in the mid-90s.

However, after a 3-0 drubbing from PSV Eindhoven on Sunday, Ajax have dropped to third with four league matches left to play. It could get worse as their next league clash on May 6 is home to AZ, who lie two points behind them in fourth place. Now it is their arch rivals Feyenoord who are on course to win the league, needing five points from their final four matches. They have 73 points with PSV second on 65 and Ajax on 62, facing having to play in the Europa League next season after 13 successive season of competing in the Champions League.

OMV bets on more LNG from ADNOC, Q3 profit soars

Like other European energy companies, OMV, which until the Ukraine war depended heavily on Russian oil and gas, is striving to diversify its supplies. "For us, it is important that we diversify the gas supply for Austria and this is a building block." High energy prices meant OMV (OMVV.VI), in which the Austrian state holds 31.5%, nearly doubled its core profit in the third quarter. For some years, OMV has been shifting its growth focus towards high-quality plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC, from oil and gas. Mubadala, which also holds 24.9% in OMV, agreed to sell a remaining 25% stake in Borealis to ADNOC in April.
